Remodel

Steve says, "If you don't finish the trim before you more in, you never will." So, we have started in on our remodel of the bus. I love having an artist/finish carpenter for a husband.

Removing old trim, getting ready to paint.
Painting
Freshly painted wall, live edge trim installation in progress.

We have two months before we move back in and I am thrilled. We purchased a utility trailer, which Steve will use for storage and as a mini workshop. And I was right. This bus thing was never just a phase.

  1. Hey there!
My partner, Phil, and I bought a school bus in May and we're now starting the conversion process. We would love to make some connections with others who have tread the path before us. I'm computer challenged, so I can't figure out how to send you a private message, but I would love to have a correspondence with you, for when we come to impasses that you have so beautifully overcome!

  2. Hi Katy and Steve!

This last semester I converted a school bus for my Masters of Architecture thesis. (Minnesota Public Radio did this short piece on it: http://blogs.mprnews.org/daily-circuit/2013/05/field-notes-how-a-school-bus-became-a-house-for-this-man/ )

In august I will be driving the bus to the west coast on a month-long adventure, and will be compiling material for a short documentary on tiny-home bus conversions. I would love to get in touch with you guys, and maybe stop by to say hi on my way through!

Best of luck with your renovation!

  3. Hi!

Just curious about a few things:

1)About how much did you guys pay for your bus....if you can share.

2)Im a finish carpenter/stair builder as well....does your husband work for himself? does he have another vehical for which he drives to jobs and such?

  4. We paid under 10000 for the bus, which was already mostly converted, and for our composting toilet and other "upgrades." My husband does work for himself, but he often contracts with other established businesses. Yes, we have a car and a truck. The bus gets about 4 miles to the gallon, so it is not really worth driving (plus the transmission is shot at the moment).
